How To Make My Floral Arrangement Last Longer

Red roses, hydrangeas, white lilies, sunflowers, chrysanthemums, peonies, and more are all some of the cut flowers we have come to love. It is amazing how these wonderful flowers are beautiful by themselves, yet they become much more when they are combined into a floral arrangement that leaves you and your recipient speechless. Floral arrangements truly take our breathe away, no matter the occasion!

As beautiful as they are, you definitely want your floral arrangement to last as long as possible, especially if you spent quite a few bucks on them. You also want your friend or special someone to enjoy them the most. Here are some great tips on how to help your floral arrangement last longer!

First of all, a good florist has already prepared your floral arrangement with flower food and fresh water to last for a week. After a week or sooner, remove the bouquet of flowers out of the vase and pour out the water that has already been in use. The water contains what are known as floral preservatives. These preservatives consist of biocides that kill fungus and bacteria. Also, keeping the stems free of air pockets that can prevent the flowers from drawing up the fresh water.

Take your vase and wash it thoroughly with soap. Next, pour flower food within the vase. If you don't have any flower food, then you can also use over-the-counter aspirin as well. Simply crush it and place it in the vase. Then, fill it up with room temperature water within an inch from the top. Lastly, trim off 1 inch of the stems at a 45 degree angle under running water. Arrange your flowers in the same manner or differently, then place them back inside your vase.

Place your floral arrangement in a cool spot within your home and out of direct sunlight. Do not place your flowers near ripening fruit as well. The fruit gives off ethylene, which is a gas that can shorten the flowers' lifespan. Every other day, perform the same trimming off of the flower stems under running water, except trim only 1/4 inch of the stem instead. Then, repeat the same steps, adding flower food or aspirin and replacing the water with fresh water.

Even with all of these great tips, it first begins with having the freshest flowers available for your floral arrangement.
